Cooking And Cleaning And Cooking And Cleaning

So today was spent cooking and cleaning and cooking and cleaning, pretty much all day and tomorrow should be spent cooking and cleaning and eating.

Why all the effort? Supper club (still haven't found a cooler name) meets tomorrow for Mediterannean Night, well and I wanted to try my cherry tart before my cherries went bad. So the house needed a good deep clean and Supper Clubs impending meeting gave me an excuse to do just that. Unfortunately I had planned to do all that on Thursday and then when plans changed I did not get the chance. Friday was Joselyn's going away dinner at Yoshi Hachi and so that did not leave a lot of time eather. So the cleaning was done in earnest today.

There is still a bit left yet to do, but the bulk of it is done and I can get Jason to help me finish it off tomorrow. I should also have a bit of time while my pita bread is rising. It should take me almost 3 hours to make it at home, it seems tastyness takes time. I also plan to whip up some Mediterranean Spinach inbetween all that too, it should be an eventful morning.

Today's cooking adventures involved making a Cherry Custard Tart for starters. They have some great cherry recipes online as it seems they are in season in the US and Crystal had got me some one day and I became determined to try this recipe. So when a friend requested cherries, I picked myself up a bag too and began my quest to find a tart pan.

This can be harder than you might think in a country that doesn't really have ovens. I also have to find one that fits in my oven and this pretty much eliminates any on base ones. The recipe called for an 11 inch pan, and that just was not going to happen. But by a twist of fate I found two 8 inch pans on Thursday and it was tart time, except that I had no time!

Unfortunately by today some of my cherries had gone off, so instead of two tarts, there is only one. It seems coming all the way from the US and then being in my fridge for a week was hard on them. But the one I made came out good, the sweetness is in the crust and it is a nice mild tart, no sickly sweet here. It was quite nice.

Once that was done it was time to get cracking on stuff for Mediterranean Night! I whipped up some Cheese Foldovers but found them uninspiring. They need some good sausage or some such to take them from a bit bland to really good. Next up was a Mediterranean salsa (which has no spicey crap in it) which came out excellent! I actually enjoy that one and think I would make it again, it would go great on crostini too.

But with that cooking out of the way it is late and I have a lot more cooking left to do tomorrow.
