Goodbyes and Glass Explosions

This morning started off with a farewell breakfast for Doc C. It was nice to get everyone together like that and chat. I wish we did more things like that as a clinic, just sit back, chat and vent. But it was also a farewell for Doc C and it was nice to see him again before he goes. He will be deeply missed in the clinic. I have already missed him and he isn't even off the island. A bright spot of sunshine each day will soon be winking out.

After breakfast it was time to come home and snatch a bit of weekend. I played some video games to just relax for a bit and put off chores for a while. Once it was chore time Brandi called and it was great to catch up with her for while and put off chores even more. I miss having her around. The three amigos, not disbanded but operating far across the planet.

Once the conversation with Brandi was finished up it was time to get off to the Commissary. I hate going to the commissary on the weekends. It is filled with people who have no idea what they are doing. They don't seem to know what they want to buy, they don't seem to know they are standing in the middle of the isle blocking all traffic, and most of all they don't know how to use self check out. I almost offered to check the two people out standing in front of me as they just couldn't seem to figure it all out. If you can't figure it out, don't use it.

But I needed to go to the Commissary because tomorrow is book club. As it is the sort of book club where you eat stuff pertaining to the book I needed to make something. And something French, as we read Julie and Julia this month which is all about a womans quest to cook all of the recipes in Julie Child's The Joys of French Cooking. The book itself is crap, it is an over glorified semi crappy blog in print form. But the concept is interesting.

It comes at a time when I want to get back into cooking. I love to cook but so rarely do. Jason is often not home, I hate doing dishes etc. It all leads up to me not doing a lot of cooking but I want to get back to it. I miss the dinner parties and sharing of food. But I digress, that is all for another blog.

So today I decided that I would make Crepes for book club. I remember eating them growing up and it has been a long time. It is also surprisingly easy to make crepes. Everyone thinks it will be so hard, but with a well greased pan, no trouble at all. So picked up the stuff to make crepes and pastry cream along with some bananas. Had I been able to find chocolate sauce I would have, but it was too much hassle.

So I started off with the crepe making and all was going well. Right up until it came time to melt the butter. Now if any one remembers the red velvet incident they will remember the sparking and the trying to burn the house down. Well today, it happened again. It seems I am no longer able to melt butter in the microwave.

So in my brilliance I decided to put it in a pyrex measuring cup and hold it over the stove. All I needed to do was melt it after all. So on goes the gas and I hold it over the stove. Just as the edge starts to get melty, the glass burst. Not shatters, bursts. So much for pyrex. Apparently this is not laboratory grade, and I find that disappointing, it was not even in the flame.

So I scoop up the chunk of butter and trash it. I leave the glass on the stove to cool and put new butter into a fry pan to melt it that way. It does double duty and greases my pan for my crepes. Everything goes swimmingly after that, though I still have a lot fo glass to get out of my stove now that it is all cool. I also am quite sure I have a few glass splinters in my feet but they are tolerable right now.

Blood, sweat and mock tears all in the name of crepes.

I had to put off the pasty cream for tomorrow as I felt getting my lesson plan done for Tuesday was more important as I have book club tomorrow and wont be able to work on it for long. So I worked on my lesson plan of prefixes and suffixes, which is incredibly boring. It is pretty much finished now, so I am writing this post.

Which is disjointed and crappy, someday I will work on my writing. But I am always trying to multi task when I write. I have the TV on, or I am getting ready to do something. It is always such a quick and hurried thing, blogging. Get it all down before my brain slowly melts the memories away like butter in the pan. This is why I am a blogger and not a writer and know my place unlike Mrs Julie.

But perhaps I should add that to the list:
1. Work on being greener
2. Work on cooking more
3. Work on better blogging

But none of that is today. Today is showering followed by printing out my lesson and then sleeping.

Oh yeah, see I forgot to even mention Mao. She peed on the floor. I scrubbed the floor with her. I put her in the shower. I cleaned up the mess. I hated the cat. I later let her out, she smelled of pee and so I did not let her sit with me. I hated the cat. She has not yet earned my forgiveness again yet. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for Mao.
